The Impact of 3D on Plannning

As most of us know Google bought SketchUp this past summer to increase the appeal of Google Earth. At the recent ASLA annual meeting the SketchUp booth was one of the more popular. Microsoft, another fairly large player, is working with Pictometry to provide imagery that has a more real world feel than Google Earth's aerial photography. See www.microsoft.com/virtualearth.

They are also funding a major project to build a street level video tour of major cities. See http://local.live.com/

Is this just about generating traffic to sell more ads on the Internet, or is there really a benefit to giving the average, non-technical person a way to visualize the impact that a proposed project would have on the environment?

Gary Smith a veteran GISer has been publishing an informal 3D GIS newsletter on the subject and has also recently written some thought provoking articles where he states that 3D is the future of planning. See http://www.directionsmag.com/author.php?author_id=364

CommunityViz ( http://www.communityviz.com/) is a program that emphasizes the use of 3D visualization in community planning.

This week PlaceMatters 06 lands in Denver to explore how to better plan communities with the help of 3D visualization. http://www.placematters.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=37

Land Planning and AU 2006

This year Autodesk University 2006 (http://www.autodeskevents.com/au2006/), Autodesk's premier learning and networking event, is going to include a luncheon meeting that will focus on a discussion of the needs of land and project planners. This session is by invitation only so that we can be sure to have the proper facilities for those interested in attending.

The session will include preliminary information on a proposed land planning solution, but more importantly this will be an opportunity for planners to provide their input on required work flow support and capabilities. This input is critical to our success.

If you are interested in attending this important event, please drop me an email at gene.roe@autodesk.com.

ASLA Conference Highlights

I just returned from Minneapolis where I spent 2 days attending the ASLA Annual Meeting. What a great experience - from the key notes, to the educational sessions and on to the trade show floor -everything was first class. There was a great spirit of optimism about the future and a very nice international feel to the event. I am now in the process of trying to convince my 16 year old son that he should consider learning more about landscape architecture.

Some of the highlights included the presentation by Jean-Michel Cousteau, which has ultimately resulted in President Bush creating the largest environmental protection area in the world this past June, a passionate challenge to the landscape architecture profession to look beyond gardens and flowers, to designing in harmony with the natural forces of the environment, and a very informative luncheon address on the Global Construction Market Outlook by Norbert Young, President of McGraw Hill Construction. There is no sign that things are going to slow down through 2010. A CEO round table, representing some of the largest international LA firms in the world provided a similar upbeat forecast.

There were a number of interesting LandTech sessions in which the power of "digital design", as Richard Schwien, Director of Technology for EDAW, described it, were highlighted . EDAW had to analyze the potential of some 80+ properties, located throughout the US, in just 10 weeks. The results were very impressive. ASLA has a Professional Practice Network focused on Computing. To get more information visit http://host.asla.org/groups/cpigroup/index.cfm

Overall this was a great conference - next year it's in San Francisco.

The ASLA Annual Meeting October 6 -10, Minneapolis, MN

October is National Community Planning month and to help focus attention the American Society of Landscape Architects - the ASLA, is holding their Annual Meeting and Convention in Minneapolis, MN this coming weekend. This is in conjunction with the 43rd annual world meeting of the IFLA - the International Federation of Landscape Architects. This is the first time that the 2 orgs have held their meeting together.  I will be attending and intend to provide some of the highlights.

The theme of the conference is "Green Solutions for a Blue Planet", stressing the importance of the impact of planning/design on the environment. Sustainability is a key part of the message that the ASLA and other orgs, such as ASCE - the American Society of Civil Engineers, are beginning to emphasize.

I would be very interested to know what the reaction of owners is to this idea, especially when it results in higher costs for design and construction, but hopefully lower operations and maintenance.

The conference runs from October 6 - 10. For info http://www.asla.org/meetings/am2006/minneapolis.html

Hope to see some of you there.
